Weight Loss Goals and My Weight Loss Journey 65

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post a completely self-indulgent story about a little challenge that a friend and I started in April of this year.  I’ve been struggling to loose weight since having my two kids so close together and then a few other things thrown into the mix, I had a significant amount of weight I needed to loose.

Well, a friend made a bet with me, that they could loose the weight before me.  Well, if you know me at all….(khheeemmmm) I can’t pass up a bet, and I am probably one of the most competitive people alive, so just the thought of BEATING my friend at something (especially this friend) was enough for me to say this is IT I’m loosing this weight!

We set a date and loss goals:  we never did officially set a prize for the winner, but that doesn’t really matter, it’s just the satisfaction of who lost more weight in the time frame.

The first date was September 5, 2010 and we each had a different amount of weight to loose.

Well September 5th has come and gone, and I am pleased to announce I have WON the first leg of the bet!!!! 🙂

I have to tell you all though, My friend has still done very well and I’m quite proud of being in this “race” together.  Its great to have someone to encourage you along and pick on when you’re winning or they are winning too.  It works for me cause competition motivates me for sure! 🙂

So – did I actually meet my total weight loss goal…not yet!

BUT – I am WELL encouraged because I am more than half way there with a total loss of 24lbs since April 15th 201o.

I’m also pleased to announce that my friend in competition has lost a significant amount of weight too, and those who know this friend have quite noticed!

So, the whole point of this post is just to say, if healthier living and healthier body is something you are working for.  You can do it!!!

I started going to the gym 3 days a week and sometimes doing Wii Fit from my living room at home.  I started REALLY paying attention to WHEN I eat.  I’m used to be REALLY bad at eating at 11:00pm, 12 or even 1:00am!  I usually don’t go to bed till close to 1am and so it was sooo easy to “Grab a snack” before bed.  This HAD to stop and really has overall.  I am not on any diet of any sort, but I am very conscience of what I eat and how much I eat, biggest thing for me is when I eat though.  The exercise has helped a ton and has really made me feel so much better and given me more energy.  The competition is what pushed me over the edge and kept me going though!

Now that we are passed the 5th of September, the race is on to the first person to meet their final goal.  First person there…well…WINS! LOL – But we STILL don’t know what!!  If you have any suggestions on what the winner to weight loss goal first should get, feel free to let me know and comment away!! 🙂

I will let ya know when I actually reach goal, I’m hoping sometime around CHA January!  We’ll see though! 🙂  I think Above Rubies Studio will have to celebrate that life goal achievement in some way!!!

I would LOVE to hear all of your weight loss stories and even struggles.  I would love to just encourage everyone to not give up on being healthy and making wise choices in eating and staying active! 🙂  And HAVE FUN while doing it!!! I sure am!!

Ok pictures???

BEFORE: Here is me at CHA in January 2010 (Probably one of the worst pics ever – but its the most honest pic of where I was at)

NOW: This is from just a few weeks ago when I went to Scrapfest at the Mall of America – I “rewarded” myself with some pictures since loosing over half the goal! 🙂

So again – FEEL FREE to share your stories with me!  We can all encourage each other for sure!  My friend and I will keep at it I am certain and I will post only once more about this when goal is reached! 🙂 It will be a celebration for all when that happens though I am sure! 🙂

Thanks for listening to my rant!

Have a Happy, Healthy and Wonderful Day!

Congrats Megan! I hope to start working out on a regular basis soon. I don’t need to loose weight, I just need to get healthier and get my energy back. Best of luck to you and your friend on your “race”!

WOW Megan!! You go girl! It is a struggle for most everyone to eat healthy. There are so many quick, easy, unhealthy choices out there. So it does take ALOT of determination. A big part of it is always thinking about why you are eating. Sometimes I just walk in the kitchen and end up opening the pantry just because I am in there! Exercise is a definite must. I am blessed b/c I have always loved to exercise and do it mostly daily. It is great for stress relief and I find that when I am exercising consistenly that helps motivate me to make wiser food choices. Make sure you are doing something you like for exercise b.c if you aren’t chances are you won’t stick with it long. There is such a variety with machines and all kinds of classes. If you like to dance all you may want to see about Zumba classes. They are a total blast. You don’t worry if you don’t get the steps right away you just move to the music. It is really a great exercise for people of any fitness level.
I find to I sometimes get into the “all or nothing” mind set, which is not good. If you eat badly one day, don’t let it ruin the rest of the week. Just take it for what it is and say you will do better the next day. Likewise, if you miss a day of exercise, go the next day.
Hopefully our eating healthy will transfer over to our kids one day. Though my daughter would eat junk all day long if I let her. But I think if our kids see us choosing fruit or veggies over junk for a snack it will be a good example to them. I think just teaching our kids about moderation in eating foods that are not very nutritous will help them in the long run too!
So stay with it. This is a hard time of year with halloween candy, thanksgiving, and Christmas. If you mess up a little, don’t give up!!

Oh you are doing great! I know the struggles and live with them daily. I have been a big girl since my teens, But with my DD I gained alot. I was put on bed rest for almost 4 months due to complications. All I did was eat! When I left the hospital I weighed in at 273 pounds> OMG did I say that out loud! I was still to take it easy and could not go back to work. Almost 3 months went by before my dr. could release me. 2 days before this my ML ended up in the ER. Turned out to be brain cancer and it was growing fast. They gave her 6 months. So I was the only one available to take care of her. She came home the week my DD turned 3 months. So I was a new mom and a new nurse. Long story short I am terrified of needles, blood, well all things dr. related. lol My ML had to have 21 meds through out the day. 2 being shots. I just started eating more and more. I was scared she would die with me their alone or that I would somehow hurt her by making a mistake with her meds. My ML made it 2 days shy of a year. 2 weeks after her funeral was Thanksgiving and it was that day that I weighed for the first time in a year. I was at 289. 🙁 I got through the day by eating. The next morning I got up and went walking. I started watching the Biggest Loser and would set and cry with them. I kept walking a little while everyday. I was in wow a week later when I had all this energy. So I stepped it up and walked in the evenings to. After a month of this I checked my weight and was at 172. I then started watching what I ate, when I ate, how much I ate. Not really a diet but a change in life. Almost 1 year later I am at 201!!! Yea I am still a big girl but I am loving the new me!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on you success and keep it up.

I am proud of you! I currently weigh 263 and am really having a hard time. I feel terrible most of the time, have a bad back and need to have both knees replaced. I don’t know what I can do to get some exercise but I do know that I badly need it. I can’t stand or walk for very long before my knees really hurt. Going up and down stairs is also a chore. My dad was sick for 2 years and I was spending every weekend with him – the only exercise I got was walking in to the hospital or nursing home. When my daughter got married 5 days after my dad died I almost cried because of the way I looked. Everyone told me how nice I looked but I felt very over weight and self concious. I still do. Today I decided I was going to start counting calories. At least it would be a start. I don’t have anyone I can do things with that is reliable so I am on my own. I hope you have continued success – that is an accomplishment I hope to have soon. My goal is to get to 200 by Christmas. Good luck! Donna

You look FANTASTIC Megan well done,
Prize??? What about a spa day or theatre tickets or going to shop at your fave boutique?
Or if you live close to each other, the winner gets the night off, goes with her hubby to nice hotel while runner up minds the kids for the day or overnight??

You could both have a jar and drop a couple of $ a week, at the end both the jars have same amount and the winner takes all to do one of the above!!

  • anita cannon

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!-You look fantastic.I know you both are so proud. Thanks for inspiring us who need to be more focused on our health.

  • Brenda

I am so proud of you. I can (unfortunately) understand the struggle first hand. And I agree the buddy system realy works. I currently have 2 work out buddies and they keep me moving. If you enjoy Wii fit I highly recommend “just dance” for the Wii. It is fun and really gets your heart rate up. It will certainly take your mind off a snack at 11:00!! Congratulations!! We are all so thankful and blessed to have a healthier Megan in our lives.

  • Gloria Westerman

I didn’t realize that you were that heavy…..from your first picture to the most recent is incredible….you really…..really….look fabulous….I also have been on a diet myself and have lost 18 pds but gain back 3.5 during vacation…..but that’s ok I know I will get it off….I do need to start some kind of excise program…..at 52 I can see my body isn’t in shape at all….

I think you need to reward the winner a gift certificate to their favorite hair salon…..to get your hair, nails and make-up…..we all know that if we feel pretty…..we are pretty…..
    good job….

  • Jill Bushart

WOW! You do look great. Your health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your loved ones. I know how much better you must feel and how much more energy you have. The older we get the harder it is to lose weight and believe me I know at 68. It is like having to use a jackhammer and chipping away at those pounds to lose just ounces that will add up to pounds if we keep at it. If you over indulge, just get back on track at your next meal. Each day is a new day to make the right choices. Your reward is a healthier body. I have also been on this same journey since February and have now lost 40 lbs. and hope to make it 50 lbs. by the end of the year and will have met my goal. Good luck and know you can do this for yourself.

  • Sandy

Wow Megan, I’m very proud of you. I thought you looked great in St. Cloud and didn’t know that you had been transforming into this beauty in the Mall pictures. Congratulations! You just may be an incentive for me to follow your path!

  • Barbara

You are looking good! Keep up the great work. I lost a good deal of weight about 10 years ago. I have kept it off by doing exactly what your are doing. I watched what went in and when it went in. I exercised and totally changed my lifestyle. You will do it, I have no doubt!

  • Marilyn

Wow! Congratulations! That is awesome! I think you did the weight loss in the best way ever! Just being focused, watch what you are eating and exercising! My daughter (26) and I, yeah I know I’m not 26 started Zumba in March, we go a couple of nights a week and watch what we are eating…she has lost and also toned and looks awesome…I have lost, still working on toning, but my stammia is amazing! So I totally agree with you about having a buddy. She told me she was so surprised at me that I would consider doing Zumba at 57 (yeah the truth hurts), she tells me how proud she is. That makes it all worth while. Keep up the great work and who needs to pay up with a bet when you have earned the self respect from someone who is there to support you and you for her. Congratulations and you look awesome!

  • Linda Weisholz

    Congratulations on your weight loss!
I didn’t have problems with weight gain during and after my pregnancy. Although,I was always hungry when I nursed my children (they’re 21 months apart). After nursing,I forgot that I had to cut back on my portions. That’s when I gained 36 lbs! It’s more than what I gained during both my childrens’ pregnancy! One of the reasons for the weight gain is that I was eating out at work often. I started bringing lunch from home and sure enough, the weight started to come of almost without effort. I been pretty good about watching my weight since then. Yes!!! I cheat just like everyone else. Presently, my daughter is getting married in two weeks and I loss the 6 lbs. I needed to loose to look nice in my gown. Now that I have reached the milestone of being a Sexagenarian, I really have to watch as not to gain too much weight.

My plan for keeping my weight in check is ~ I eat normal portions of food at meals. I do have my sweets, but very small portions of it. Another thing to drop off those unwanted pounds, is to seriously cut back on breads, pastas, white potatoes and grains. Even whole grains, they load on the pounds when you eat too much of it. All these extra starches turns into sugars and stores as fats in your body.

Good luck with reaching your weight goal. The prize should something to pamper yourself.

  • Becky

Congratulations Megan! You look wonderful! I thought you had lost some weight when I saw your pictures at Mall of America! It shows girl, good job! A good prize would be to get hair done, makeup, and nails. Or maybe a new outfit that will make you feel beautiful!

  • JANICE

Megan you look great and probably feel fabulous! I too have lost a total of 56lbs. and feel so good. It took about a year through Weight Watchers which is a program centered on portions and better choices in the food we eat. Much better and healthy living. The people at my meetings are so much fun. I would encourage others to find a great support group and improve your way of life. It can be done!

  • Dianne Bell

Congrats, Megan, losing weight is not easy, it is one of the hardest things to accomplish. Your photo is beautiful and we can really see the difference from last January. Keep up the good hard work, you can do it….

  • Cyndi

Lookin’ good! Keep it up! I think a day at the spa would be a great prize. I little pampering does us all some good. I once lost 30 lbs. by just not reaching for that candy bar or heating up that cheese dip to have with my chips while watching tv. Put your picture from CHA on the fridge and right beside it put a picture of that slinky outfit you want to buy when you reach your goal. Seeing it on the door (before you open the fridge) can be great encouragement! Good luck on your bet, but I know you will win!

  • Debby Jensen

Congrats Megan-you look great. Now we all know the reason for the new hairdo!! I find the biggest eating habit of mine is sitting in front of the TV with nothing in my hands to do. Now I stay in my craft room and work on crafts and watch TV. My hands are busy and so is my mind(and not from the TV!!), so I eat less. When I get the munchies, I grab a glass of water and that usually helps. As for my exercise-I work in retail as an area manger, so believe me I walk at 8 hours a day sometimes carrying a load of clothes-now that’s a work out! I like the suggestion of putting money in a jar-use that as a reward, maybe a night away with your hubby. The main thing is have fun while losing and think of how healthy you will be after.

  • M'Liss

Congrats Megan. You do look great! I’m glad you have friends who can encourage you and set a small bet! I also believe it’s the little changes we make in our lives, like snacking and being aware of what we eat. My husband and I are doing that now and it’s made a difference.
Looking forward to seeing your January 2011 pics – you can do it!

  • Kathy Immekus

Megan: First let me say you great. IAM 63 YEARS OLD AND WAS VERY MUCH OVERWEIGHT.So in April, I also started a weight loss program with two of my friends who are about 20 years younger than me. So far I have lost 27 lbs. My goal is to lose another 20 lbs. by Christmas. I also stared training for a 5K run in July and was able to run my fist 5K on Sept.18th. I did not finish first, but I did not finish last. So keep up the good work and I will check back with you in December.

  • Linda Lapotka

Oh my goodness! that is wonderful. I noticed that I have gained 10 lb in the past year and I want them off! 24 is amazing. Your after pictures or 1/2 way pictures look amazing! It seem s like so many card making and stamp events have bad foods. I guess we need to rethink our treats.
Prize, Hummmmmm a message or spa day. How does that sound?

  • marcia

Congratulations! It feels so good to lose weight, it kind of is like cleaning out that closet or dresser drawer, we know we need to do it and dread the thought of it, but once it’s done it makes us feel good! Pampering prizes always make me feel special!

  • Billie A

Congratulations to you and your friend on the weight loss. What a nice feeling that is. I too struggle with weight problems, all my life I went back to Weight Watchers in May and I’m down 30.8 lbs and it feels so good I have so much more to loose but I’m on my way. Love eating healthy and feeling satisfied and knowing when I do get to my goal that I can continue to eat this way..or hope to as I said I’ve always had a weight problem. Again congratulations. Love your site and videos and all you do. 😉

  • Sheri C

You look fantastic but, most of all, you sound as if you feel fantastic! That to me is just as important. Great job on the weight loss to you and your buddy, keep up effort and keep us posted!

  • Judy

You look great! Keep up the great job and you’ll reach that goal before you know it. Love the suggestion of loser watching kids so winner can have a relaxing overnight with her loved one.

  • laura

WTG Megan on your weight loss!!!!! I need to lose weight too but just can’t seem to make myself.

for the prize — i agree with those who mentioned a spa day. a good hour message and pedicure….yummy with no calories!!!!

  • Marcie Smith

    Megan,
This is fantastic!!! You are such a beautiful person both inside and out. I am so proud of you for taking charge of something that obviously has been bothering you. Health is the main reason, but also self esteem. Every one’s comfort level is different. You must be comfortable in your own skin so to speak. It is not an easy undertaking to change your eating habits and loose weight, but the real trick is keeping it off. So once you have reached your goal, never let it become an overwhelming problem again before you work on it. If you gain 5 to 10lbs, correct it then and you will be sure to maintain your weight. You are so young and a really pretty girl with so much talent and such a beautiful family. Stay healthy so you can enjoy them for many many more years to come. Best of luck on reaching your goal. I am so proud and happy for you.
    Marcie

  • kathy

way to go! This is such a struggle for me. My husband and I are starting today! Keep up the great work and I want to hear more of your story!

  • Suzan

Good for you do not give up…. Its the so rewarding to see the end result I to started in may 2010 and sept 2010 i lost 43lbs and I still have another 10-15lbs to lose I already love the how i look n feel about myself its amazing how much of an effect it has on oneself…. do not quit you can already see the transfermation starting i Know from my own experience so many people say how wonderul i look and that its like a new persons and to tell you the truth i feel like a new person!!
You know as far as a prize I really cant give you much help with that but your right the weight loss it self is the biggest prize one could ever have!!!! But if i had to suggest something i think its would defenity be a spa treatment and when your all done Scrapbook your Journey through this stage in your life.
    Good luck to you

  • Sandra Copeland

Hi Megan,First of all keep up the good work.I know you can do it.I lost 10lbs in 2 months and I have about 15 more lbs to go.You are so right how you feel. You have more pep and also you feel like you can take the world.

  • Mary K. Ware

You are looking great Megan! I too gained about 30 pounds after having my first 2 kids, it took me forever to lose it and when I finally lost it all, we found out I was expecting our third child. Luckily, I was smarter with the third pregnancy and didn’t gain as much as I did with my 1st two kids.

Once you reach your final goal, it’s a good idea to step on the scales once or twice a week and have a limit set on how much you should weigh. My average ‘OK’ weight is between 128 and 133 pounds…when I get to about 132 pounds, I start cutting back a little. As you know, it’s a ton easier to lose a pound or two than it is to lose 10 or more pounds…doing this has helped me keep my weight off for over four years.

Keep up the good work, it’s not easy…but it’s totally worth it!

    Mary K

  • janelle

Well done you look great. Why not wait till you both meet your goal weight & share a pampering day together as you have taken this journey together it would be great to celebrate together.

  • Aleda Haynes

Megan, I noticed your new profile picture. Wondered what the purpose was, now I know. You are so smart to betaking it off now while you are young. I feel inspired. Hope I can start a program myself. Keep it up. Glad for you and your friend. God Bless!

  • Deb

    Great work Megan!!
I have lost nearly 27kg (59lb) since the end of January this year. I still have about another 14kg (30lb) to go to my goal weight, and will get there eventually! I am following The Biggest Loser Club program here in Australia, an online weight-loss tool, and it has been amazing!! Now lots of my friends are taking up their own challenges, and that is very rewarding for me too!! Great work – keep it up!! We are SOOOO worth the effort!!

  • Shelly

Great job! I would like to lost some weight. It would be great to be down to 150 but realticly I guess 170 then 160 … I’m trying not to snack as you. I don’t go to the gym no one to gowith. Hubby and I walk daily but its at a very leisure pace with our dog … and you know how dog like sniff and he won’t budge faster than she goes. I wish good luck to both of you gals!!!

  • Shari Young

You go Girl!!! You are lookin GOOD, Contratulations on your weight loss and keep up the good work. I think the person who gets to the goal weight last should buy an outfit for the other person. I try not to celebrate with food.

I have about 50 pounds to lose ao I better get busy. My dog really needs to be walked so she can lose weight so I am trying to get motivated by that.

  • Diana

Congrats Megan on your weight loss. My husband and I opted in on a lifestyle change through his work in order to save $160 a month on our medical insurance premium. We’ve both been doing so well. My doctor was ready to put me on insulin because my blood sugar would not come down. The very first week I able to drop my sugar 65 points , and now in the 7th week my sugars are in the normal range. Something I have not seen in a few yearss. This life style plan has been so easy, no measuring, counting, specialty foods, just what you normally would eat with the exception of sugar and milk and switching to 100% whole wheat and 100% whole grain breads. I still have a ways to go, but I actually see myself reaching my goal. As for the prize I think you should both treat each other to a girls day out together. It doesn’t matter who lost the most weight, it’s what you accomplished together. Thanks for inspiring us!

  • Pat

Way to go Megan. I have been thinking that you looked like that you had been loosing weight for a while now. I have started to comment on such several times but didn’t…..my bad! 🙂 I to have lost after just coming to the point that I need to do this. I went from a size 12 to 6-8 and some even 4’s. Way to go. Its so easy to put it on but so hard to get it off!

  • Moira Efird

    Megan,

So very proud of you and your committment to a healthier, you. I also wanted to comment that your picture updates are fabulous. Keep up the good work, I know it doesn’t come easy. 🙂 You are beautiful anyway that you look. Moira

  • sherry

Congrats. on the weight loss. I struggle also. Lost 20 lbs but am now at a plateau. Guess exercise would help but finding the time is sometimes very hard so I just walk the dog more (plus he needs to lose also). Keep up the great work. Do it now because as you get older it gets much harder. Most of my gain came after the age of 36 after a total hysterectomy and has really been hard for me to lose. I am now 56 and its even harder for me to do. So keep up the good work.

  • Cindy

Hi Megan, congratulations. I was my heaviest in July of 2009, my wonderful dad which had prostate cancer was concerned for me he said “Cindy you need to lose some weight” he said I go for all of these chemo treatments for you, you could go on a diet for me. Well that really hit me I went to a weight clinic and by December 2010 I had lost 50 pounds and as of today I have lost a total of 65 pounds. I went from a size tight 18 to a 10. I wish my dad could see me now but we lost him to prostate cancer on December 21, 2009. Sometimes it just takes someone or something to finally open your eyes and see the light.

    Megan
Congratulations on your weight loss. Your post could not have come at a better time for me. I am also on a weight loss journey. I work with a trainer twice a week. The reason for my weight loss is my health. I have been struggling. So
On my blog I have started scrapin to lose. I have set a goal for myself in the cards I make for cards for soliders, this will benfit them and me, it will keep me out of the kitchen, and in my scrap room. My blog is bearycreativecards.blogspot.com. Please check it out and let me know what you think. I am also a Club Ruby member.

I must say you look fabulous. I love the pictures you had taken. Wow before and afters. Congrats. It is so much easier when you do it with someone else. My husband and I started at the end of January. He reached his goal 50 lbs. I am still struggling with the last 15. I have lost 34 lbs. Would like to lose 15 more. Just got back from vacation and my clothes are feeling tighter. I am afraid to get on the scal in the morning but I have to, for my own mind. I need to see the numbers. WW worked for me and walking every day. Back on it tomorrow. Best of luck and keep it up. Maintaining is the hardest part. Once I start I do good. I have had about of month of falling off the wagon but seeing your post inspires me to keep going. TFS. Phyllis

  • Lacy Gilbertson

Hi, Megan!!! I just lost 44 pounds and feeling fabulous! Congrats on the 24!!! You look fabulous! But I must say, seeing you in January at CHA you looked beautiful. Never even gave your weight a thought. But I know how it is when you know you need to do something. It all of a sudden clicked for me in April and away I went! I’ve been sick lately and losing more but really don’t want to! Never thought in my whole life I would ever say that I was afraid of losing more!
Keep up the good work!!! Doesn’t it feel amazing? And don’t you have so much more energy? Lovin’ it!!!!!
    Much love,
    Lacy

  • Tammy Brownlee

Wow, April & May must have been spring cleaning for the Soul! I started a “life change” in May. I have lost 26 lbs. and have about 10 to go for goal. Less than that is a bonus! I am doing Weight Watchers on line and at meetings. I have to be closely watched! LOL.
Congrats on your success! Although I am following the plan pretty much, it really is about making better choices and not eating late at night. (I did this too!) And EXCERSISE! I have to meet my credit card at the gym more often! LOL. I have rewarded myself with a very cute outfit and this weekend I went “shopping” in my smaller clothes and found 4 pair of shorts that fit again! Very exciting! Good luck to you and your friend!

  • Sheila

Congratulations Megan. I know the journey well, I just hit my weight loss goal of 45 lbs. What inspired me was loosing a friend who was 15 years younger then me. She went to sleep and never woke up. Her weight caused her to have heart problems no one knew about. The next day I joined weight watchers and I haven’t looked back. Feeling great and now back into a size 6 looking pretty great too. Keep moving forward. To you and friend congrats to both of you.

  • Rebecca

You look fabulous, Megan!! Congrats to you. After the birth of my second child, I joined WW and lost 35 lbs. making me thinner than I ever was in high school. I kept off the weight and after my 3rd child was born, I returned to WW having to only loose 15 lbs. I did it and remained successful for almost 5 years. Well, the last year has been difficult with my husband going on disability due to an Arachnoid Cyst on his cerebelum. The stress this has cause over the last year has been a lot to handle resulting in a 30lb. weight gain! It was really depressing to view my picture with Robyn in Karlee at CHA this summer. Since school started back, I am back to my routine of exercising. I still need work on the stress eating! Life throws us so many challenges that it is difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Great job on your efforts! It is nice to see we have support through our fellow crafters!
