Copics vs. Prismacolor for Card

09 March
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 02:06 Written by Megan Elizabeth 39 Comments

Last week Above Rubies Studio gave you one little preview of awesome work from one of our New Design Team Members, Jennifer Young, and I received lots of great emails and questions about her card.

So what I am doing for today’s videos is show Copic Markers and Prismacolor Pencils along with the Gamsol (or Orderless Mineral Spirits, OMS) like Jen used in her beautiful card she shared with us last week.  This is going to look nothing like Jen’s card, but it will show you how to blend the colors for a beautiful watercolored soft effect.

This is a two part video series: Part 1 shows how I colored the stamped heart with Copic Alcohol Markers and then another stamped heart using Prismacolor Pencils and the OMS. Part 2 I show how I put the card together and how I made fringe grass and colored that with my Copics as well.

Products in these Videos:

  • Heart stamp I used is from Unity Stamps
  • Prismacolor Pencils (used 50% off coupon at Hobby Lobby or AC Moore)
  • Copic Markers (I bought very reasonably out at CHA this past January, I realize it’s not for everyone simply because of cost, but I wanted to show it anyway for those who were interested.)
  • Oderless Mineral Spirits ($3.99 from Hobby Lobby)
  • Blending Paper Tips
  • Memento Rich Cocoa Ink
  • Verse Stamp from NewClearDollarStamps.com – I Love their stamps and verses and they are very reasonably priced with great customer service. :)
  • Kraft Cardstock
  • White Georgia Pacific Cardstock
  • DCWV Box of Cards Pack for card bases
  • Ribbon from AC Moore (Offray Ribbon)
  • Pure Poppy Hybrid Ink from PaperTreyInk.com (New Ink for ME!!! YAY!)

I really hope that you enjoy this card – I really enjoyed making it over the weekend and loved that I had a chance to get into the Studio on Saturday even while not being 100% back to speed yet and just create!  Becca came over with me and we just enjoyed and evening of movies and time together doing what we both love!  Really helped to relieve some of the stress and I hope that I will be going 90 miles an hour over the next week as Above Rubies Studio gears up to release a ton more projects and designer’s work for you all to see! :)

Megan–Glad to see you back! You know I’ve heard of and seen copics but never REALLY knew how to use them, so thanks for that comparison and your card was very cute.

Love the Copia card. Will try and locate those marking pens. What department did you get that blending pen in at WalMart?

I always thought why would anyone spend so much on a Copic marker—always thought they were so ridiculously expensive for a stinkin marker. Then, one day recently at a local scrapbook store, they had a Copic Techniques event. For the heck of it, I gave them a try on a couple of sample (stamped) images they had sitting on a table for the event. OMG what a difference with the quality of these markers. I am a believer now and need to start saving my pennies….lol Thanks for the videos!! Great stuff!!

Cute Card….I actually use the Prisma Color techinque and you can purchase the ordorless mineral at HomeDepot for under $7.00…love using that due to the fact that Copics are quite expensive for my budget. As for the Prisma’s Michaels with my 50% coupon…great deal. Thanks for your tutorial made me comfortable knowing I’m doing it correctly…hope you feel better :)

Great card! So glad to see that you are feeling a little better :) I’ve used Copics quite a bit and would LOVE to have the collection that you do…lucky duck! The brand of OMS that I use with my Prismacolors is the Mona Lisa brand from Michaels. Love that stuff :)

Welcome back. So happy to see you creating again. There’s a gamsol technique on you tube using the prismcolor colored pencils. This technique is similar to yours. I ordered the copic markers before I saw this tutorial. I wish I would of saw the turorial first because I would of saved a lot of $. I tried the pencils and gamsol and it works great! The results are very similar to copics and a lot less $.

Cute card. Walmart also has watercolor pencils that you blend with water that I have used with stamps. Not sure about acidity so I’ve only done it on cards but an inexpensive way to try out coloring stamps. Glad you’re feeling a little better & at least good enough to get in some play time!
